As a parish community, we are part of a larger Church that consists of the Diocese of St. Peterburg: 432,209 Catholics residing within five counties, 74 parishes and 7 missions, 268 priests, 114 deacons, 36 religious brothers and 172 religions sisters. It was with the bishop and our diocese that we as a parish came into existence.
As a diocese, we are part of a larger Catholic community here in the U.S. that is made up of 195 diocese each of which is represented by one or more bishops within the United States Council of Catholic Bishops. The USCCB exercises certain pastoral functions for the Christian faithful of our territory in order to promote the greater good which the Church offers to humanity, especially through forms and programs of the apostolate fittingly adapted to the circumstances of time and place, according to the norm of law.
The diocese in the United States make up a small part of the more than 2,800 dioceses of the Catholic Church around the world encompassing 1.2 billion Catholics, held in unity by the Bishop of Rome or as he is more commonly known, the Pope, whose job it is to follow in the steps of the Apostle Peter and strengthen his brother bishops as well as all Catholics around the world.
Beginning in 1968 Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend began offering married couples an opportunity to spend time together, away from the distractions and tensions of everyday life, while encouraging them to focus on each other and their relationship. Over 5 million couples in more than 100 countries have attended the weekend. Our pastor here at SPTA is strongly involved in the program.
Thousands of couples headed for cold, unloving relationships or divorce have successfully overcome their marriage problems by attending this program. Retrouvaille began in 1977 in Canada and quickly spread to many other countries. The program consists of a weekend experience combined with a series of 6-12 post-weekend sessions over 3 months. It provides the tools to help put your marriage in order again.
We are proud to partner with Lighthouse Catholic Media, producers of an excellent selection of life changing talks given by some of today's top Catholic speakers.
